Sakura no Ki no Shita, which translates to Under The Cherry Blossom Tree, is a French-Japanese international touring theatre and film company, based in Paris and founded in 2016 by artist Rei Watanabe and artist Coralie Prosper.

Similar to Takarazuka Review and opposite of Kabuki, women play both male and female parts, giving a fresh perspective on the human condition in how society views gender roles.Through contemporary direction, Sakura no Ki no Shita provides opportunity for women to perform classic male parts as such as Romeo, Hamlet or Cyrano de Bergerac, consequently playing with the audiences views on gender and sexuality.

Specializing in physical theatre, our company also writes and directs contemporary work, taking advantage of our dual cultures, exploring both the French and Japanese languages, histories and legacies.

Sakura’s film work follows the research of Ken Loach and the Brothers Dardenne, exploring social themes and flirting with the reality in order to better question it.
